Municipal Enforcement is proposing a Highway and Traffic Safety Bylaw to address several issues relating to the use of public rights-of-way throughout the County. The proposed bylaw consolidates a number of existing bylaws and establishes regulations, prohibitions, and penalties relating to the following matters. 1) A permit or license of occupation must be acquired for the use of any public right-of-way, including temporary fencing for grazing, ditch haying/baling, semi-permanent grazing/farming (the old leasing program), Texas gates, parades, and events, etc. 2) ATV use on rural roads permitted only for agricultural use with conditions 3) Weight limits and truck routes within hamlets are established 4) Prohibition on the use of engine retarder brakes within hamlets 5) Property owners will be responsible for the maintenance of adjacent sidewalks, boulevards, and alleys 6) Regulations on parking are defined 7) Obstruction to pedestrians and traffic are defined 8) Tires with spikes or damaging lugs are prohibited The proposed bylaw may be viewed at www.40mile.ca. Submissions must be received at the County no later than September 13, 2026.

A drafted Highway and Traffic Safety Bylaw was presented to the County of Forty Mile No. 8 Council on June 24th, 2026, who passed it through First Reading. The public now has an opportunity to review the draft and provide comments. It can be found here. The proposed bylaw addresses issues relating to the regulation of traffic, the use of road allowances (including ditches), parking, speed limits, weight and dimension restrictions, off-highway vehicle access, damage to roads, signs, obstructions, permits, the responsibility of property owners, and associated offences and penalties. The drafted bylaw and several schedules can be viewed through this link HERE. Interested or concerned parties may provide comment by sending an email to [email protected] or by mail to County of Forty Mile No. 8, Box 160, Foremost, AB, Canada, T0K 0X0. Submissions must be received at the County office no later than 11:59 pm on July 31, 2026 and clearly reference the draft Highway and Traffic Safety Bylaw. **EFFECTIVE APRIL 7, 2025 ** The County of Forty Mile No. 8, Foremost, Alberta increases the Road Weight Allowance to 100% of normal weight on all gravel roads, within the county under County Control.
