Important Dates for Prospective Councillors

If you’re considering running for County Council, here are some key dates to set aside. We’re sharing them here so you’ll have time to make any arrangements in your schedule. These sessions and events are designed to support you in your new role, provide valuable training, and connect you with resources and people who want to see you succeed.

October 22, 2025 – Mandatory Training & Organizational Meeting

  • All new Councillors must attend provincially required training under the Municipal Government Act which will be provided at the County office in the morning.
  • On the same day, Council will hold its Organizational Meeting, where roles and responsibilities are outlined, and committee memberships are selected.
  • This is the official start to your work as an elected representative, with plenty of support along the way.

October 29, 2025 – First Regular Council Meeting

  • The first official Council meeting of the new term.
  • A chance to begin working together as a team and to start representing your community in action.

November 18–21, 2025 – Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA) Fall Conference (Edmonton*)

At this province-wide gathering, you’ll not only complete the additional mandatory training required for new Councillors, but you’ll also benefit from:

  • Learning alongside peers – Meet Councillors from across Alberta, share experiences, and build lasting connections with people who understand rural challenges and opportunities.
  • Hearing directly from leaders – Provincial ministers and senior officials provide updates on key issues that affect municipalities, giving you insight into how decisions in Edmonton connect to life in our County.
  • Exploring new ideas and solutions – A large trade show showcases products, technology, and services that support rural municipalities. It’s a chance to see firsthand what other communities are using and what could work here.
  • Building confidence in your role – Sessions are designed with new Councillors in mind, helping you quickly feel at home in your responsibilities while also engaging with the bigger picture of rural governance in Alberta.
  • Strengthening your voice – The conference provides opportunities to hear from, and be heard by, decision-makers, making sure rural priorities remain front and center.

* Please note: you’ll need to set aside time to travel to and from Edmonton as part of your commitment to attend.

Serving on Council is about teamwork, learning, and representing your community. The training and conferences are designed to help you succeed, even if you’ve never been in municipal government before. You’ll be surrounded by colleagues, mentors, and resources every step of the way.

Regular Council meetings are generally held on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month, along with committee meetings as scheduled. Council and staff work together to make sure new Councillors have the support they need to manage these commitments.
